I will be strarting the CCT pipeline the first of 2003 and was wondering, I'm a single guy living off base do I
A: Pack up all my goods and put them in storage prior to indock.

B: Wait till I have a break between scholls but not knowing if that chance will be given for me to arrange such a thing.

I will not fail but personal injuries and murphys law might take affect. So I would like to prevent more work down the road.If anyone has been down this road i could use some advise thanks to all inadvance.

IMHO (in my humble opinion) I would not count on having time between schools. Not to say that it won't happen, if it does that's cool but, I wouldn't put any money on it. Also, if you leave all your schtuff where its at and have a buddy 'look after things' then you run the risk of your 'buddy' mistreating all the schtuff! (doing a Bravo Foxtrot on you) I don't mean to say that because it's in storage it won't get mussed up but the chances are that it'll be mostly in one piece. Once you get to Hurbie then you can have the folks release your schtuff from the storage and chuck it all in the dorm room and press with training. Less worry about getting your schtuff moved in the small time you have between schools and more focus on getting through the schooling itself. Take this as 'just my 2 cents'.

I'm in a similar situation. My retraining class begins in July and I'm putting everything in storage before I head. I will stay TDY for tech school, so upon graduation I'll come back here, load up and DITY move to my follow-on. I'm pretty sure you'll stay TDY while in the pipeline, so it's in your best interest to store it. You know it's safe and you save on rent.

My two pesos worth would be to tell you to store it. Not for the convenience mentioned by the other folks, but to be more like Cortez and 'burn the boats'. Leave with an all or nothing attitude.

Finally, the little knowledge that I have will come in handy. I too plan on entering the CCT pipeline (have the PAST scheduled for the end of this month) and am currently working as the Resident Manager at a storage facility. Go with the storage, it will be a tremendous weight lifted from your shoulders. As for storage, here's a few tips:
1) If you have a copy of your orders, try to get a discount. Storage facilities know that people are getting relocated due to the new "War on Terrorism" and are showing their patriotism through discounts. It won't matter what exactly your orders say.
2) Have them replace the door gasket to your unit before you begin to store. This is the seal at the very bottom of the door and (if you unit has direct access outside) will work wonders in keeping out the dust that can accumulate over 18 months.
3) Depending on your location, humidity may be a problem. Here in the South, it's a killer. If you have a friend or family member in the area, you might want to have them visit your unit once a month and set a humidity reducing product like Damp Rid in it. These products are good about 4-5 weeks and they WORK wonders. Depending on what you are storing, climate-controlled storage (meaning air-conditioned) is generally not needed.
4) If you think the stuff is worth storing, INSURE it. Facilities usually do not offer insurance on your property and will not be liable if something was to happen. You can ask for an insurance brochure from them when you rent the unit. The insurance companies are usually pretty inexpensive for storage units.

LB, do you have a set Orientation date for FY 2003? I plan to get in the first or second class that starts but have not seen any dates?

Thanks!

PS: If anybody has ANY questions re: storage, feel free to email me. Hope this has been helpful!!! []mgharrell7@yahoo.com[/]

KJ, Burn the boats is very insperational!

In 1519 Hernando Cortez sailed his fleet of eleven ships into the harbor of Vera Cruz. He and six hundred men had come to defeat Montezuma and claim the riches of the Aztecs. Common practice was to leave guards with the ships, as they might be needed to later return to the old world for supplies--or to retreat from the enemy. But Cortez came for victory so he gave the order to "burn the boats." And so the boats were burned--all eleven.
When the going gets tough, those who keep one eye on the way out, usually lose. They lose because the struggle no longer has their full attention. They lack the focus and the commitment needed to win. You see it happen every day: in sports, in marriage, and in business. If you want to win, don't allow losing to be an option. Victory comes with the commitment that is willing to "burn the boats."

LBtravel24, I realize you're new to this board, so if you want to start any flames, put them in the General Discussion and Buffoonery forum. If you can't see the simile, then ignore my post.

LBtravel24, I don't think you understand. My post was not directed to you, it is to everyone. It's also a piggy back to KJ. Take it with a grain of salt.

I think its "Misunderstand AA Week" here at good 'ol Specialtactics.com. Seems to me he was just giving a good Hooyah to KJ for his post and elaborating on the whole "burn the boats" thing so we all could Hooyah with him. With all due respect to LB, who's arguing before they understand? Remember the key to water con: relaxation.
