I have been looking at retraining into CCT for years, the problem I am facing is that I am stuck overseas for another year and they (almost everyone I talk to) say that I can't "Formally" apply for CCT training. Has anyone successfully done this? What do I need to do?

Petey, I am stationed overseas as well and planning on cross-training into Pararescue. I have talked to TE and others regarding this issue and have been told that you have to be stationed CONUS to "formally" apply to Special Tactics. That means that the first thing you should do, is be sure that you really want to be a Combat Controller. Then apply for a CONUS assignment. I do beleive that you can start the initial part, such as taking the PAST and the required physical. Somebody jump in if I am incorrect on this. I would also recommend this, to make sure you qualify (in every aspect). This is to prevent you from going back CONUS only to find out that you cannot even try out. Also, I would take what your local MPF says with a grain of salt, since they are often in the dark about the regs regarding the ST careerfield (they didn't have a clue when I asked). The best source for this info, is going to be TE and TSgt Hicks. If you need more info, I would email them. Hope this helps, and good luck.

Laddie, you are correct in your advice. Do all you can to make sure you will qualify for the training when you get to the CONUS. That includes a PAST and the Class III physical. I've done the same here. What MY MPF has told me that while I cannot submit a formal package I can submit a Letter of Exception to Policy concerning a curtailment of my current tour here. If signed by my squadron, group and wing commanders that they can send the letter up to our command HQ and hopefully they will 'OK' it. Put it this way...I won't put any money on it getting through all this but I will not take 'NO' for an answer. Being bullheaded about it helps.

Thanks for the replies, I have already been in contact with TSgt Hicks and he is helping with the issue. The benefit that I have is that I am already a 7 level Air Traffic Controller and have passed the physical already. Thanks again for the words and advice. I really don't want to have to wait another year to apply, I have already waited six.

Petey,

You have to wait till you come back stateside to crosstrain...however, you can take the CCT PAST and also input a "letter of intent" indicating your desire to crosstrain into CCT prior to PCSing back to the states...this should get your MPF moving and start working your crosstraining stuff for when you return to the states...email me if you have questions, but as stated, TSgt Hicks is the most knowledgeable on the issues...if you're working with him, you should be good to go...

Good luck,

Another year will fly by man. Cover all your bases, get all the shhtuff taken care of, and you'll be rollin. I was in this same situation 5 years ago as a firefighter at Aviano with better aspirations. Run the hills, cut as much tape as you can, than toss a couple back at the Cal bar... Good thing your connecting yourself with the people now, just keep updated here and dont listen to no, especially out of that MPF. Speedys cents...

Could somone give me some advice? I am a cop planning to crosstrain to CCT, but I have one and a half years left overseas. I know there is nothing I can do untill I get back state side. My plan is to try out for Pre Ranger and then to attend Ranger School. My question is, how beneficial would Ranger School be to me when I try out for CCT? I have also started Lt. Rellck's workout. I work twelve hour shifts so I don't always have time for the swims and runs, but it's still been kicken my butt. It's a good felling hooya!
