Someone on here mentioned that there was a Security Forces RANGER. I suppose this means he went through Ranger School. I was wondering that if a Security Forces guy can get a slot to go through it then could a SERE Instructor get a slot to go through it?<P>------------------<BR>

As far as SERE, I'm not sure, but I know SF gets slots for jump school, pathfinder, Ranger and air assault through the 820th SFG. This is because the 820th works with the Army some of the time. As SF, If you're not on an FPF or part of the 820th, it is hard for troops to get those schools. You know, I didn't answer your question, but there is some extra info in case you ever wondered.<P>------------------<BR>NeMe<P>"Feel free to rebut at anytime..."

A 2nd Lt I know went through Ranger school about a year and a half ago. It is roughly the same selection process....i.e.. Pre-Ranger...then Ranger school. Security Forces has only so many slots though so it is really competitive. And when your done you go back to your SF unit. SF Rangers do it for the training and the experience alone. You wont be going on any ranger-like missions. I haven't heard of SERE rangers though...you never know though<P>------------------<BR>A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject.<BR> -- Winston Churchill<P>Hoo-yah!<BR>Froto

Is Ranger School an option for PJ's? If so do only AFSOC PJ's in STS's get to go? Just curious. []images/icons/confused.gif" border="0[/]

I've seen a few tabbed PJs in the STSs. Don't know about the ACC ones. From what I have heard, given today's circumstances and manning levels, there isn't much downtime for anyone to accomplish additional schools. The squadrons need the bodies. <p>Hooyah! SJP

I know a PJ that has a Ranger tab that was never part of STS, all RQSs. I wouldn't think it would affect if your are AFSOC or ACC. But I am sure it is still hard to get. If it was optional, I would think all the PJs would want to go through it.

A51,<p> In your opinion was it the Ranger school alone that sucked or being a Ranger in general? I am looking forward to the school. Although it maybe physically challenging I know I am going to like it. I am looking forward to having that TAB on my shoulder, jump wings on my chest, and being known as an Airborne Ranger.

Being a Ranger is a hard life. I personally think that you would get burn-out or go crazy at about the 3 or 4 year point. They are hard men doing a tough job. That said, I want you to know that IMHO PJ's should not go to Ranger school. (I am not sure about CCT only because I do not know their course curriculum in tech school that probably teaches the same stuff). Back when Lt. Col. Haus liked the idea, we sent two guys from my det. They both came back honor grads and said that it was a great 'gut check' but they did not learn anything new. We don't have time to attend coursed that teach things like landnav, that we already know. If you say it is worth the two or three weeks away anyway, then you don't have the big picture of guys away from home for 290 days a year. Sending them on TDY's at unit funds to not learn anything new is a waste of resources and I don't care how pretty the patch is. What do want? Capability or looks? BTW, the tab is only allowed while serving in a Ranger comp. Now you could do something like post a MAJCOM sup (like AFSOC) and maybe get away with it for awhile. But, (there is always a but) if it becomes an issue, the Uniform Board would step in. Personally, I don't care for that, as none of them are PJs or Controllers. Bottom Line: Ask yourself, if they did not give a shiny 'Ranger Tab' on graduation, would it be worth our time?

Jeremy, I've noticed in another post that you seemed to be interested in the Air Force after getting getting bad info from other service recruiters. Now you are going to be a Ranger? I guess you are in your late teens or early 20's (you were a little kid in the 80's) so not being sure of what you want to do is typicall, however your motivation towards special operations seems suspect. Most operators don't chose the profession it chooses them and they don't do it for the "shiny badges", "tabs" or "being known as an Airborne Ranger", if they did, they wouldn't last long. As to being sure you will "like Ranger school", Both my Plt Sgt and TL (as well as others)in my Force Recon platoon, graduated Ranger school as Marines. I assure you, none of them "liked" it, although they were proud of their accomplishment. If you think that being an operator is more about GETTING cool uniforms and equipment and less about GIVING, you are in for a RUDE awakening. This may come off as a little harsh but hopefully provides you with a chance to ask yourself "why" you want to sacrifice in order to become an operator instead of "what" you can get IF you do...

Elmer66, First off...you are 110% right about me being interested in the AF. Especially CCT. BUT what you don't know is that I have always wanted to become a Ranger TOO. You are right about my age range...I am 17, and the only recruiters I don't really like are the Navy and Marine recruiters around HERE. They must not want people too bad if all they do is rag on the Army and AF. "Most operators don't chose the profession it chooses them..." Definately agree. BUT although my "being known as an ABN Ranger," statement was quite cocky (for that I apologize), I will consider wearing the Ranger tab, jumpwings...etc as an accomplishment. I do not want to wear them to impress people...many people I know don't even have a clue what Army Rangers or CCTs are anyways. The military is all I have ever thought about doing after school. I mean I have many other options, like drafting, I could/have made really good money drawing up blue prints for people. But it just isn't me. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of military "knowledge" I guess you could say, but no experience. Unless you count JROTC. []images/icons/grin.gif" border="0[/] Despite no previous military experience I am certain I am mean't for SF. <p>Oh and your reply was not at all "harsh" I have had worse as some know. But I always learn something. If I said something that wasn't too clear or I shouldn't have said in this reply, let me know. Later!

Jeremy, I have a pretty good idea where u are coming from. I'm 18, and hoping for SF myself. However the Air Force just offered better options as far as education then the Army. Also I would hope to wear a Ranger tab and Jump wings. Not to impress others but more so that i could feel more a part of it. Did u decide to join the Army? Just courious. Jon

HOO-AH!!!!! Actually I decided a long time ago, after a hard debate between AF and Army. I enlisted on Sept. 07, 2001. I have infantry, Airborne and Ranger training in my contract. I only enlisted for 3 years, but I plan to switch over to the AF after my enlistment is up. That is if I do not get accepted to West Point []images/icons/wink.gif" border="0[/] .

There is another reason to attend the school: Credibility. Most of the material is old hat to a cct. However, a tabbed STO will no doubt have an easier time coordinating an airdrop with a battalion commander. At least that is what I hear....
