Yesterday I did the CSS for the first time ever. I did 500m in 11:28. Not as fast as a lot of you guys, but it definetly did not use as much energy as freestyle

I took the PAST again and swam an 8:12. I am pretty happy with that as a new personal best. My goal is to break 8 mins next time.

Did what I "think" was my first 500. The local pool is a 25 yard, so I did a 500yard in 8:31. However, the fancy calculator I found on google says you need 550yards = 500meters.

Earlier in the start I was doing 50's in 45s, so realistically my 500meter would be 9:15ish?

My best time is 7:40. I swam when I was little, but at 25 I'm pretty proud of that considering I've only been swimming since June and taught myself all over again. I've gotta say though, they talk AB the book Total Immersion on this site a lot. I just bought it Saturday and it has already changed the way I swim and made my stroke more efficient. I'm hoping to get under 7:00 by the time I leave for BMT.

500 8:30... I'm sure that I can train my ***** to be faster but 8:30 freestyle is about as fast as I wanna go.

Some of you guys have impressive times, I am assuming these are with flip turns. In normal swimming, and the first PAST test, the flip turns are accepted, but are they allowed on the 500m freestyle the 1st day of indoc?

Nice, ~16 seconds off of times being put up at the NCAA D1 National Championships.

Flip turns are not accepted in the PAST..not in mine anyway, and I was under the impression that it wasn't accepted period. So definately not at indoc. I'm pretty sure diving blocks are out of the question as well. I swim my 500 m in about 8:00. If your swimming in a 25 yd pool, 21.8 lengths is equal to 500 meters. I was really excited about my time in a yard pool until I swam in a meter pool and it added 50 seconds to my time.

Also, I'm not calling anyone a liar, but the American record for 500yds is 408 set in 2008. So if your really swimming 4:36 why not just train a bit harder and go to the olympics.

i agree with you garrett616, olympics would be my main focus if i was that fast! although, it is a pain in the butt to get ur time to drop when ur that fast. my all time best was 5:23 and let me tell you, every second counts. it could take someone another 3-4 years to drop those 18 seconds

I joined swim team for my school in November of 2010. We're in the water 15 hours a week with 4 hours of dryland a week. I was voluntold to swim the 500m today for the first time. I got a 5:54, I died the last 100 though. I'm a "sprinter" however.

Swam a 7:30 500m in my qualification swim for civilian scuba class at my university a couple weeks ago. This time last year I could not complete 100m swimming without stopping to catch my breath and my 500m was well above 14 minutes. For those worried about swim times, practice form, get the breathing down and put in the yardage and you'll be fine, I never thought I'd be able to swim fast.

I just started training and swimming laps a couple months ago. Teaching myself from Total Immersion, this site and Stew Smith. My first 500m (swimming meters, not yards) doing CSS was 15 minutes. Today i did it in 10:28.

While the CSS is a nice stroke to learn, if you want a faster freestyle time then you need to be practicing the front crawl.

EDIT: And so that I'm contributing to the original thread, I'm used to swimming 1500m rather than 500m. But for a 1500 I usually hover around 26 min. My goal is to get it down to a 20 min after I watched a teammate do it.

and just did 500m (swimming yards = 11 laps) freestyle for the first time the other day - 9:23

just started swimming in May. jealous of all you high school swimmers. just glad I don't feel like I'm going to drown anymore.
