Hello all.

Recently i jammed my big toe while not kicking correctly in my martial art. it's swollen up, and hurts to run on. I was wanting to know what an alternate to running would be.
Such as using an eliptical. How far on that (and what resistance setting) would be equal to 1 real mile? or in biking?
I've been making large advancements on my run time recently, and i don't want to lose it, if this continues for a while.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Bike, swim, elliptical...really anything that's gonna get your heart rate up for an extended period of time. That way you won't lose your aerobic fitness. You may want to throw in some light squats and leg presses also just to keep those quads strong while you aren't able to run. Good luck

I found that extended sessions on the eliptical (30+mins) at a setting of about 13 keeping the pace above 9 helps maintain your running ability. I've been put out of commision for a few months at at time before (stress fractures, blown out knee) and only took a small hit to my running when I got back to it after healing.

Thanks Gmac. I'm hoping to take the PAST in august, and hope this only takes me out for a week or two.

i know it's not running but major cardio workout and no need to use toe's is if your gym has a Rowing Machine. It's pretty much a full body workout. I know it always makes my lungs burn! I usually do 2000m with gas mask and try to beat 8mins. I usually try to do this a when i'm unable to run for some reason.

It may not even help but it's good for the heart rate increase!

That man had a lot of great information. I'll try the indoor rowing again. (it's been a year or two)

Pretty conventional theories of training. Considering his job is to get Navy dudes ready for BUDS in the most efficient manner, it is pretty much to be expected that he would rely on the old formulas. Specificity (focus on run, swim, cals),moderate intensity (LSD and interval training for example),etc.
If you are in a hurry to get prepared and your goal is to pass the PAST or the SEAL PT Eval, conventional PT methodology is the most time efficient. If your goal is overall fitness, functional fitness, and just to be OK at these events, Coach Glassman (CF) and Brian McKenzee (CFE) have some less conventional theories to offer.
