I just read the new policy TE posted, and from what I understand, LASIK, LASEK, and PRK are all now waiverable? I thought I also saw TE say on the forums that LASIK was authorized, but then I check the main site, and under the Pararescue info it said in bold "LASIK not authorized." So my question is that, has the main site not been updated, or is LASIK still a no go?

I only ask because today I had an exam with a laser surgeon, and she said I qualify for any eye surgery, but highly recommends LASIK for me. I've looked everywhere, and even tried talking to my recruiter about this. If somebody could take just a minute out of their day, it would mean the world to me. Thanks

LASEK is authorized, LASIK is not (due to MFF/CDQC course). I just miss some pages that need updating sometimes...

WHOA there...I just got home from the PJ medical officer advisory board. One of the items I remeber discussing were the standards and waiverable items. It seems that I remeber the flight docs saying that there were some new reasons to disapprove LASIK...something about where the incision is made. Let me talk to the MAJCOM Surgeons to get a better handle on this one before you dump money into a surgical procedure that might permaently DQ you for aircrew/PJ/CCT.

I'm going by the latest PRK policy...double checked AFMS site and there are no updates.

I will say PRK is better because there is no incision to worry about...and it has been waiverable longer than LASEK.

Good idea to check PJ2PA.

My Air Force eye doctor advised me to go with PRK. I'm heading to Travis next week for PRK. PRK recovery is more painful. But that is short term. His opinion was that Lasik is not as proven regarding potential long term medical/vision issues. (although apparently the procedures were both developed simultaneously). He confirmed that it is currently waiverable, but still recc'd PRK. He mentioned some Navy study that has supported the Lasik waiver, didn't sound like he was a big fan of it.

But that is just one eye doctors information and opinion.

Already got the LASEK done. After doing research and having it re-confirmed here, I'm pretty confident they will take me; I'm seeing great now. And even though it is my dream to be a PJ, if by some terrible stroke of misfortune came and DQ'd me forever, I'd just have to find the next best thing. Thanks for all the help and information though guys

It looks like I may have to get LASEK/PRK to qualify to become a CCT. Other then the doctor recommendation, any reason to get PRK over Lasek or vice versa?

Also, any update on the above post PJ2PA?

Thanks guys.

I checked the AFMS website (again)...same policy is still in effect...PRK/LASEK...NOT LASIK

I had the PRK done last year in 07. It really wasn't that bad. Maybe the first night and a little the day after, I'd say it was painful. Also, about a week of not seeing really clearly. But the fact remains I basically have new eyes now. I was never able to see clear out of my left eye and now it is almost perfect. I score a 20/15 now with both.
