could this really help with running and lung capacity or is it a complete waste of 100$?
What exactly does it do, how does it help with cardio?

I would talk to a trainer or a doctor about it first. There is a lot of quackery out there.
I have my doubts. Running involves, blood, muscle, and lungs. This only looks like you're excerising one, and that can't be enough.

I have to agree with TE on this one. You would be better off simply learning how to breath properly in the first place. Breathing through a straw will definately help.
Remeber that in general throughout life, exhalation is the most important component.

RKC and TE,
I tried the straw thing for 30 minutes, it really didn't seem to do anything. Is the improvement in lung capacity large enough to make it worth walking around all day with a straw hanging out of your mouth? Or did I miss the sarcasm? Thanks.

Get a smaller straw!
Seriously. The idea is to use a straw that forces you to radically slow down and focus on breathing. Every bit of air you get is a luxury. If a drinking straw is no problem (and it should't be), get a coffee straw or a couple of them. At first you may say, "No way, it can't be done". But stick with it. Pretty soon you will figure out how to breathe through it. You should feel very relaxed and calm, and your heart rate should drop. You may get 2-4 breaths a minute but no more. This level of control is the key. You should find that after a while you can actually feel where and how to pull more air into your lungs. I still do this as a method of forcing myself to slow down and calm down, especially at night before bed. Kind of like forced medetation.

Yeah, if you can't get small straws, try biting down on one end of your straw (it doesn't work as well as coffee straws, but it's better than nothing).

I had a bud who tried out the POWERLUNG before indoc. He washed out because of whatever... But he swims like a damn fish, squared away in the water. He said he invested in one before indoc and he noticed a difference for sure. But hey, its hearsay right. So it might be better just to try it out for yourself...

You can adjust the levels on it and the highest levels seems impossible since air wont go in or out. but im still not sure how well it works.

I have never tried breathing through a straw before but I will try it now. I have never used the Powerlung but I know there is several kinds. You may want to get the Powerlung Sport. A good website to go to is www.navyseals.com click on shop then look for it. Good Luck!!!!!

i had some extra cash to burn.. so i got the sport one with the highest resistance, when i first got it i struggled to even use it because the resistance was hardcore. after about a week it started getting easier but i'm still on the lowest level. it's a pretty substantial breathing workout. the website claims it's a lot more of an advanced workout then simply breathing through a straw or using other devices that only restrict airflow. but i'm not a scientist so i couldn't tell you how they measure up. what i do know for a fact is that for me personally i feel that it's helping my capacity. i can take deeper breaths and exhale with a lot more force.
