Workshop35,
Good work...you dropped your time significantly. Keep it up. As for me I have dropped my time to 8:50...but would like to get it down to 8mins.

9:38, more improvement but still not great. 3 months till I ship, so I'm hoping to dip into the 7's by then.

My fastest ever was just under :09(css). That was awhile ago though. Now I'm in between :09::15-:10. Practice and practice, but can't seem to bring it back down. Really need to work on doing freestyle.

When swimming normally and constant i get about 11:30-12, I pushed harder than normal a couple of days ago and got 10. I dont see how you guys are getting 7 min...I would like too...I have read the TI book and try and concentrate on my form more than anything.

I used to have the same issue with running, I could never understand how people got sub 7 mi times. I've been doing my intervals, and now am running there. It is the same as running, you have to do intervals and practice, practice, practice.

I haven't been in the water in a couple months, and pulled a 9:02 today. I was pleased, but that left me with much room to improve. I will be back tomorrow pushing myself farther. In two weeks, I am going to swim 1500m for the 306th try-outs, I am sure I won't pull a 9:02 for that one hehe. -AB

During swim Season I was doing 5:49 but now consistently I am working at 6:15 -20ish...its all about breathing on both sides and getting your rhythm down. However, I still do push ups like I have an extra X chromsome.

Also you guys may want to check out this news article and video on Portland PJs...pretty hairy helicopter crash footage. I appologize if this is the incorrect forum or has been posted before.

Somewhere around 8:41 if I remember right. I've got the goofiest swimming style out there. My own freaky method of a wall kick, I hardly kick my legs during the stroke. Plus, I breath every single right hand stroke. Uncoordinated in the pool I guess.

any "non-swimmers" arent going to be as fast,,,but it doesnt mean they dont put out ...them swimming an 8 min 500 is like a HS or college swimmer doing it in about 5 or 6...or even 4 somethings.....
Glide...technique...is all thats different.....
both potential operators should, at indoc, "should" be equall in endurance, stamina, and of course mental toughness, to put out equally....again,,,in the end....both guys may have PUT OUT the same....
(love your quote silverback..any origin...or did you make it up)

Fastest was 5:13 (High School 1998) but now I would be lucky if I get 6:30. But I really don't do it for time anymore but more towards PT conditioning.

94:35, took a lunch break and nap in between. Bacon cheeseburger slowed me down towards the end so I finished on my back. Should break 7:00 in about three weeks I hope.

My 500's hang around the 5:40's depending on what other events I swim that day, I'm a 'flyer, so I don't really care about the 500...

is there a secret to how you guys are swimming this damn fast. I just found out from Chief Humphry that my package will be approved and I will PCS to the 720th. I'm 5'9 and about 215lbs. and i'm swim around 9:30 - 10 min. and I thought that was pretty good. Now I see I am no where close to where you guys are at. How do you do it.

How are you PCSing to the 720th if you haven't even gone thorugh CCOC? or is that what happens to anyone that gets a CCT package approved from overseas? It just sound weird.

In an earlier post pa3 asked:
Anyone know what the world record 500 is? from the olympics im guessing.

500m is not an olympic distance, it goes from 400 to 800. Here is the 800 record from usaswimming website.
7:38.65 Grant Hackett AUS Montreal 7/27/2005

As for me 9:31 back in '92 when I was a Navy EOD wannabe. 11 years later after doing Stew Smith's 12 weeks to BUD/s program to get ready to go back in the reserves I did it in 9:48(both times were combat sidetroke, my freestyle sucks). Would like to get under 9:00, but to be honest I'm too old and fat.

what stroke are most of you guys using for the 500 on the PAST? And what is the most used stroke thru the Pipeline and in Indoc? Im terrible at freestyle and just wondering if I really need to work on it before I leave.

I think a couple guys on here have used the CSS on their PAST to conserve energy for the other events. I personally use freestyle on the PAST. I believe you fin more in Indoc than anything but working on your freestyle still wouldn't hurt since it'll give you a good workout.

I use freestyle on the PAST and whenever I practice without my fins on.
In the course you will use freestyle on your recovery lap after each underwater, so being efficient at it is really a matter of getting more rest during underwaters. Otherwise fin, fin, do underwaters, and fin some more. If you look at the course breakdown on the main page you'll notice the finning events and distances you must complete, and you'll notice they aren't nancy boy times eiher. Good luck!
