I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for help or experiences lower back tightness/pain while running? It is usually the worst for me during the first 2 miles, after 3 or 4 miles it loosens up a bit. I thought I might be my shoes, but I bought some new ones and still the same problem. My next guess is it might be from doing the routine in "Power to the People," mostly the deadlifts. I've also incorporated clean and presses into this routine. Help!!

I was having the same problems and finally went to a sports med doctor because I was worried I had something really wrong with me. Turns out it was just really poor hamstring and glute flexibility and tightness which was being made worse by exercises like deadlifts. I started streching more, especially the hamstrings and glutes and the pain pretty much stopped. I still get it from time to time but usually can kind of tell if its going to happen by how the hamstrings/glutes feel before the run. If they are tight and sore, then I probably will have the lower back tighten up and hurt.
My 2 cents hope it helps.

I sometimes go and get a massage and that usually helps. One thing that I had problems with when running was my knee would start acting up. She said that lower back and hamstring tightness will cause knee problems also. So stretching is the key to a lot of injuries and the occasional aggravations. Hope this helps.

3 weeks on an eliptical machine fixed that same problem for me.
