I have been doing alot of running lately in preparation for the Indoctrination course, about a week ago I was doing some intervals and about a minute into my workout I felt a sharp pain in my groin area, I think it may be due to not stretching thoroughly prior to running. This also happened about a year ago, and I tried to keep running on it but eventually it got to the point where it was hard to walk nevermind run, after a while I went to the base hospital and they just said that it may be a pulled groin, threw some motrin at me and said your good to go .I stayed off of it for a couple weeks then was able to run like nothing had ever happened. Has anyone had any experience with something like this or maybe some tips for me to heal, continue with my training then avoid any type of reoccurence? Thank You

First of all, who told you to stretch, before you run! Second, it really depends on the severity of the damage to the tissue of the adductors, gracialis, and other muscles/tendons.

I do not know what type of training/running you are doing, but you better get some muscle balance, before you pull something more severe!

Yeah it sucks having a pulled groin doesn't it? I just pulled mine last tuesday night after I ran, I went to the doc on thursday, and he gave me some alieve and cruthches and told me it would take 6-8 weeks to heal. I'm really pissed because it hurts like a #@$@!#$&!! and I was supposed to take the PJ PAST may 15 so I'm out of luck!

Thats rough about your injury and then past test, but I probably don't have a pulled groin because i never got crutches and I can still jog at a slower pace w/o any pain, but like I said it happened sprinting, and it only hurts when I start running faster. I will just continue to jog for longer distances and keep up with my swimming, KB, and other calestethics.

I had a groin injury a few years back while playing flag football. I showed up to the game late, and tried to explode of the line with no warmup. Bad idea. It felt like someone placed a hot iron on my inner thigh. The next day I was on crutches, and black and blue from my knee to my balls. After about 2 weeks of rest I started some light exercise, then I started stretching and strengthening that area more, and after a month or so I was good as new and haven't had any problems since.

Stretching before you run is like driving a car with no oil. Your muscles are cold and not lubricated. You will cause more injury than good. More and more research is proving this and doing away pre excersise stretching. Get the body warm doing a very light excersise involving the muscles you will be stressing. Stretch after your work out.

I know the new research says to not stretch before running, but I find that I perform better and recover faster when I do a little stretching pre-run. I warm up first with some joint mobility and light exercise, and then do some light stretching to my major leg muscles. If I skip my pre-run stretches, my legs feel sluggish and are sore the next day. I'm not saying my way is the right way, it's just what's worked the best for me for years, and I've stayed mostly injury free (knock on wood).

For yhose of you who do static or ballistic stretches, before running, you are reducing your performance! I have addressed this subject. You need to perform DYNAMIC STRETCHES!!!!!!!!!!

You probably shouldn't stretch right before a run if you haven't warmed up. But if you warm up first, stretching helps tremendously. Do some light excercises like cherry pickers, jumping jacks, steam engines, etc. Then start your stretch for 20 seconds a muscle, then do your run, then stretch again.
