I tried a search for this topic, but was unable to find the info i wanted. For those of us who plan on making the Air Force a career, what does the promotion to major and beyond look like in the STO career field? Thanks.

Concentrate on getting through the training before worrying about rank.

You're worried about Rank? Go find another job because I don't want anybody as a STO that starts off worrying about promotion. The smartest, hardest working men in the Air Force are in STS and they deserve better than some guy who's worried about his next promotion.
Try this AF Core Value on for Size:
"SERVICE BEFORE SELF" Ever hear of it?
Get on down, start knocking them out and then try focusing on the mission because your career sure as hell isn't my concern!

Wow, I didn't know such a simple question could evoke so much negativity. Guard MC do you have a chip on your shoulder or something? It was a very legit question in my opinion and a question I'm sure most have wondered about before. I plan on making the Air Force a career so I was just courious what my future might look like. If you don't have an actuall answer to my questions how bout you just don't answer. What you said added no value whatsoever to this post or any for that matter on this forum. But hey I'm sorry for offending you in the first place. have a good night all.

mlhogg,
If you have a sincere desire to join ths STS community as an officer in Combat Control, your best bet would be to listen to what these Operators have to say, especially Guard MC since he's a present STO. Take what they say to heart, both the critisism and encouragement because they've been there.

Bad idea...mlhogg, these guys have sacrificed more and done more for our every day freedom then we'll probobly ever know.

I have no problem taking criticism that is constructive or informing or reforming, but just plain criticism is uncalled for. I was just wondering why GuardMc blew up for no real apparent reason, but hey like I said i didn't mean to piss the guy off, just wanted to know the answer to a question. I was under the impression thats what the forums were for. But let's put a stop to this post, its informative value is zero!

mlhogg,
I would love to be a fly on the wall during your training. GuardMc is one of the most helpful people on this site, I think it just looked bad when you started off asking about rank and promotions, instead of how great the job is, how you can be the best operator, etc.

I have to second what jwb said. These STS folks on here, especially GuardMC take time out from there duties to use this board to help folks live a dream. Just take the advice and carry on.

I have NONE of the experience that Guard MC does, and that comment even steams me. I'm not going to speak for him, but the reason you get into this kind of career field isn't for "personal" or "financial" gain. This is something you do because you have a fire burning inside you that refuses to go away. Why would you look into this career field thinking "I wonder how the AF could benefit ME with this job..." The people that get rank, get rank because what they did to get that rank they would have done regardless. You do the mission because it needs to be done. You don't go to recover a downed pilot with the thought of "hmm, will this help me get Major? No? Nevermind, abort mission!..."

I decide when to close a post.

Don't take anything personally on the forums.

GuardMC does not have a chip on his shoulder...he (like I) has probably seen officers in the past that were more worried about their OWN career than their troop's careers, well-being, etc...and responded in kind.

Your attitude comes off as a bit cocky...to ask about what the promotion potential for STO is pure buffoonery...for one thing, the odds are against you making it...for another, even if you started now (and made it), it would be probably 8-10 years before you could even consider becoming a Major...thus, to look 8 years out and figure out what the promotion rate/criteria will be is impossible...too many variables...I recommend you train for STO and go for it...don't worry about rank as an STO...way too far down the road.

Again, didn't mean to strike a bad nerve with you guys. The reason I didn't think it would be a big deal is because when officers come to our det. and talk about their jobs they always talk about promotion ranks. I have never had an opportunity to talk to a CCT, so i was unaware that this topic is unacceptable in the community. I'm not worried all that much about making rank, i would do this job as a LT. for the next 30 years if it meant being a STO. Also I'm the least cockie person you will ever meet, so bad on me for coming off like that. Lesson learned.

30 years as an LT? C'mon now. It's going to be a mission in itself to reclaim your credibility on this post. Are you sure you want to work with people who can't answer a simple question for you? Imagine what the chain of command is like. Out!

I think TE did answer that question.

If you "THINK" he answered the question then why don't you put that in quotes? Or were you talking about TE calling his question "pure buffoonery"? The question was for beyond Major, say it with me, "Beyond Major". TE told him it would take 8-10 years just to consider becoming a Maj. This could go on forever, reminds me of my days at CCS. OUT!
