Hi,
I am currently in a very cold winter environment (all snow and its about -5 outside right now) with no access to a treadmill. I need to start running again, but its really cold outside and it's taking a toll on my skin and body.
Does anyone have any reccomendations? Anyone have any better suggestions than just wearing lots of layers of sweats which I read on a previous post in this forum. I was thinking of picking up a US GI balaclava and a polypro underwear set to wear under my PT sweats. Would that be too warm and restrictive or would I be just fine? Also has anyone tried smart wool? Is that stuff approved for use in the military?
THanks for everyone's help - This board rocks, Matt Mouser

This may or may not be helpful to your situation, but jumping rope is a very good substitute for running. Probably not the answer you're looking for, but you do what you have to.

Com. Matt,
I feel your pain. Running in temps like that is never fun. Be sure to cover your mouth and nose (a balaclava is a good idea) to warm the air a bit as you inhale.
Smart wool is the best investment you could make in the clothing dept. I have sworn by it for years, as have my brothers who work in the woods all winter regardless of the temperature. It won't let you down!
Nate

Only negative five? Ha!
Here is the system I use for winter running and biking that works well for me (Even on hour plus runs). Keep in mind that it is generally windless here, so you may have to adjust for some wind-chill depending on your area.
0 F + : Lightweight poly layer with lightweight windproof jacket/pants. Thin cycling headband, mid-weight poly glove liners, and whatever socks you normally use.
-20 to 0 F : Use wool or poly socks (lightweight to mid-weight). Add balaclava or neoprene face mask.
-20 F and below: Add fleece gloves (over the glove liners), switch to hat, add goggles. May want to add fleece bottoms or top depending on duration.
Notice that this is not a lot of layers. You need to be able to sweat. You will be cold for about the first ten minutes of the run, but suck it up.
